Frequently asked questions
Questions families ask us most.
Plain answers about our services, who we help, appointments, translation, giving and your privacy. If your question is not here, ask us: there is no wrong question.
01
Services
What we do, and what it costs
Is Siouxland Immigration Services Inc. a law firm?
Siouxland Immigration Services Inc. is a nonprofit immigration law office. Our team includes licensed immigration attorneys and representatives accredited by the U.S. Department of Justice, so we can give legal advice and represent you before USCIS.
Do you take immigration court cases?
We take a limited number of removal defense cases each year, chosen by need and capacity. When we cannot take a case we refer you to trusted attorneys and help you prepare for your first hearing.
What does a consultation cost?
Screening calls are free. A full legal consultation is $50, and we waive it for any family who cannot pay. Application fees charged by USCIS are separate, and we file fee waivers whenever you qualify.
02
Eligibility
Who we can help, and where
Who can get help from Siouxland Immigration Services Inc.?
Anyone living in the Siouxland region of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, whatever their status, language or ability to pay. Our newcomer services are funded for refugees and humanitarian parolees, and we will always point you to someone who can help if we cannot.
I am undocumented. Is it safe to contact you?
Yes. What you tell us is confidential and protected by attorney client privilege. We do not share your information with immigration enforcement, and we will tell you honestly what options may be open to you.
Can you help if I live outside Sioux City?
Yes. Many clients meet us by phone or video, and our Storm Lake clinic runs every second Thursday. We work with families across northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.
03
Appointments
Booking, formats and changes
How do I book a consultation?
Choose a time on our booking page, call us, or walk in during office hours. You will get a confirmation with the date, time, format and what to bring.
Can I meet by phone or video?
Yes. Every consultation can be in person at our office, by phone, or on a secure video call. Choose the one that works for your shift and your family.
How do I reschedule or cancel?
Call or text us at least one day before your appointment and we will find a new time. If something urgent comes up on the day, call anyway: we would rather hear from you.
04
Translation
Certified translations and interpreters
Are your translations accepted by USCIS?
Yes. Every certified translation comes with a signed certificate of accuracy that meets USCIS requirements, and a second linguist checks the work before it is delivered.
How quickly can you translate a document?
Most certificates are ready within three business days. We confirm the date only after we have reviewed your documents, and we offer a rush service when a deadline is close.
Can I book an interpreter for a doctor's visit?
Yes. Clinics, schools and families can book in person, phone or video interpreters by the hour. Give us at least two business days' notice when you can.
05
Donations
Giving, receipts and how gifts are used
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Siouxland Immigration Services Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every gift is tax deductible to the extent the law allows. You will receive a receipt by email for your records.
How is my gift used?
Eighty seven cents of every dollar goes directly to legal services, interpretation and newcomer support. Gifts pay for consultations that families cannot afford, interpreters for medical visits and free citizenship classes.
06
General
Privacy, languages and everything else
Do you share my information with anyone?
Never without your permission. Immigration, family and contact information is stored securely, seen only by the staff working on your case, and never sold or shared with enforcement agencies.
What languages do you speak?
Our staff and interpreters provide support in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and other languages, including Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Vietnamese, Karen, Swahili, French, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Haitian Creole, Tigrinya and Nuer.
The information on this site is general and is not legal advice. Every case is different, so please talk with one of our attorneys or accredited representatives about yours. Contacting us does not by itself create an attorney client relationship.
Still have a question?
Ask us in your language. There is no wrong question, and asking does not commit you to anything.
